Fiber Industry
Becoming an alpaca breeder also means a commitment toward the development of a new fiber industry in the United States. With increasing numbers of alpacas and careful selective breeding, Americans are producing animals with excellent and desirable fiber characteristics. Our numbers are still relatively small and we have many years ahead of building our national herd numbers for a large scale fiber/textile industry.

Why are fiber measurements and stats important? Fleece quality traits are heritable, that is heavily influenced by genetics. Thus, if you are considering purchase of an alpaca for your breeding program or starter herd, assessing the fiber traits carefully is very important. Yes, environment does and can have an impact on the fleece, but genetics has the larger role in determining traits in the individual alpaca, as well as what that animal will pass on to his/her offspring.
